NBC Part 9 covers Housing and Small Buildings: detached and semi-detached houses, townhouses, secondary suites, and other small buildings up to three storeys in building height with a building area no greater than 600 m². Building area is the building's greatest horizontal footprint, so the 600 m² limit is a single cap for the whole building, not an allowance for each storey. Buildings beyond those limits generally fall under Part 3 of the NBC, with stricter requirements for structure, fire protection, and egress.
ExAC Section 2 tests your ability to apply the NBC 2020 to real project scenarios. Part 9 questions tend to test specific numbers: the minimum public corridor width serving dwelling units, the fire-resistance rating (FRR) between a garage and a living space, the minimum sound transmission class (STC) between separate suites, and air barrier lapping requirements. The illustrated companion helps you internalize those thresholds by showing them in context, which is exactly the kind of understanding ExAC scenario questions test.
On Examitect's ExAC study plan, Part 9 Illustrated is listed as a supporting reference for Section 2. The primary code reference is the full NBC 2020. Use this illustrated companion to build a visual understanding of the housing requirements, then confirm recall with the code text before exam day.
